What is IPL therapy?

Not just drops.
A real solution.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy uses precisely calibrated light energy to target the root cause of most dry eye disease — chronic inflammation around the meibomian glands.

When these glands become blocked, your eyes lose their protective oil layer and tears evaporate too quickly. Eye drops temporarily relieve the symptoms, but they don't fix the glands. IPL does.

Originally developed for skin care, IPL has been evidence-based to be one of the most effective treatments available for evaporative dry eye and meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD).

"IPL is the most significant advancement in dry eye treatment we've seen in the last decade. For patients with MGD, it addresses the problem — not just the symptoms." Dr. Shailinder Bhullar · Look Optometry Guildford

What to expect

Your IPL session,
step by step

01
Consultation

Dr. Bhullar assesses your meibomian glands and confirms you're a good candidate for IPL. Takes about 30 minutes.

02
Preparation

Rachel applies a cooling gel and protective eye shields. The treatment area is cleaned and prepped.

03
IPL Treatment

Gentle pulses of light are applied across the cheeks and lower eyelids. Most patients describe it as a warm sensation. Takes 10–15 minutes.

04
Gland Expression

Immediately after IPL, the softened glands are expressed to clear blockages and restore healthy oil flow.

Is IPL right for you?

Best suited for
these conditions

IPL is most effective for patients with evaporative dry eye caused by meibomian gland dysfunction. Your optometrist will confirm suitability during your evaluation.

Meibomian Gland Dysfunction

The most common cause of dry eye. IPL is the most effective treatments available for MGD.

Evaporative Dry Eye

When tears evaporate too quickly due to poor oil layer quality — IPL restores that layer.

Rosacea-related Dry Eye

IPL reduces the vascular inflammation associated with ocular rosacea and dry eye.

Chronic Dry Eye

Patients who've tried drops for years without lasting relief are often ideal IPL candidates.

IPL may not be suitable for patients with certain skin types or medical conditions. Your optometrist will advise during your consultation.

Common questions about IPL

Everything you
need to know

Does IPL therapy hurt?

Most patients describe IPL as a warm sensation — like a light snap or gentle heat. It's very well tolerated. Rachel applies cooling gel beforehand to maximize your comfort throughout the session.

How many sessions will I need?

Most patients notice meaningful improvement after 2–3 sessions. A complete cycle of 4 sessions (with your 5th complimentary) gives the best long-term results. Sessions are typically spaced 3–4 weeks apart.

How long does each session take?

Each IPL session takes approximately 15–20 minutes. Your first visit will be longer as it includes your dry eye evaluation and consultation with Dr. Bhullar.

Is there any downtime after IPL?

No downtime. Most patients return to normal activities immediately. Some mild redness or warmth around the treatment area can occur but typically resolves within a few hours.

Is IPL covered by insurance?

Coverage varies by plan. We offer direct billing and will check your benefits before your first appointment — just ask when you book.

Am I a good candidate for IPL?

IPL is most effective for patients with meibomian gland dysfunction and evaporative dry eye. It may not be suitable for all skin types or certain medical conditions. Dr. Bhullar will assess your suitability during your dry eye evaluation.
