What is Ortho-K?

Orthodontics —
but for your eyes.

Orthokeratology uses specially-designed rigid gas permeable lenses worn only at night. They gently reshape the front surface of your cornea while you sleep — and when you remove them each morning, your cornea holds that new shape all day.

Clear vision. No glasses, no daytime contacts, no surgery. Think of it like a dental retainer — except the result is waking up and seeing the world in perfect focus.

It's 100% reversible. Stop wearing them and your cornea returns to its natural shape within days.

What to expect
1
Corneal Mapping

We use the Medmont Meridia topographer to map the entire surface of your cornea in precise 3D detail. Painless, takes about 10 minutes.

2
Custom Lens Design

Your lenses are manufactured specifically to your cornea. Every pair is unique — designed around your prescription and eye shape.

3
Fitting & Training

We fit your lenses and walk you through insertion, removal, and care. Most patients feel fully comfortable within the first week.

4
Clear Vision by Morning

Most patients see dramatically better after just the first night. Full correction takes 2–4 weeks depending on prescription strength.

Who it's designed for

More people qualify
than you might think.

Whether you're a parent watching your child's prescription climb, an athlete tired of contacts, or an adult who isn't ready for surgery — there's likely a fit for you.

Athletes & Active Kids

No frames slipping mid-race. No contacts drying out on the field. No risk of a lens falling out in a collision. Ortho-K gives athletes completely unobstructed, glasses-free vision from morning to night — worn only while they sleep.

👁️

Children with Myopia

Ortho-K is one of the most proven methods for slowing myopia progression in children — reducing it by up to 50% vs standard glasses. Starting early protects your child from serious long-term risks: glaucoma, cataracts, and retinal detachment become significantly more likely with high myopia.

🔬

Adults Avoiding LASIK

Not ready for permanent surgery? Ortho-K delivers the same daytime freedom — clear vision without glasses or contacts — without any procedure. Reversible at any time. Ideal if you have dry eyes, don't meet LASIK requirements, or simply prefer a non-surgical path.

★★★★★

"My son plays competitive hockey and his prescription kept getting worse every year. Since starting Ortho-K at Look Optometry, his prescription has barely changed — and he plays every game without glasses or contacts. Best decision we ever made for his eyes."

Gurpreet S. Parent of Ortho-K Patient, age 11
★★★★★

"I'd been told I wasn't a great LASIK candidate because of dry eyes. A friend mentioned Ortho-K and I came in for a consult. That was two years ago — I haven't worn glasses or contacts during the day since. The technology they use here is impressive."

Michael T. Adult Ortho-K Patient · Surrey BC
★★★★★

"My daughter is 9 and she took to the lenses so quickly — by day three she was putting them in herself. Watching her prescription stabilize over the last year has been such a relief. The team here genuinely cares and explains everything thoroughly."

Our Technology

Precision fitting
starts with the right tools.

Ortho-K is only as good as its fit. A lens designed without accurate corneal mapping will underperform or cause discomfort. We use clinic-grade diagnostic equipment on every patient before any lens is ordered.

Medmont Meridia Topographer

The Medmont Meridia creates an accurate, colour-coded 3D map of your entire corneal surface — capturing thousands of data points in seconds. This is the foundation of every Ortho-K lens we design.

  • Detects corneal irregularities before fitting begins
  • Monitors corneal reshaping at every follow-up
  • Guides custom lens design for precision and comfort
  • Essential for safe, effective Ortho-K fitting

A-Scan Biometry

Our A-scan ultrasound measures the internal structures of your eye — including axial length, which is the most reliable indicator of whether myopia management is actually working in children.

  • Measures eye growth in myopia patients over time
  • Tracks whether treatment is slowing progression
  • Non-invasive and takes just minutes
  • Standard of care for myopia management programs

"Ortho-K only works when the fit is perfect. The Medmont gives us the accuracy to get it right the first time — that's why we've been using it since we started offering this treatment."

Is this right for you?

You may be an ideal candidate if...

Your child's prescription keeps changing

If the number goes up every year, Ortho-K is one of the most effective tools to slow or stabilize progression before it becomes high myopia.

You or your child plays competitive sports

Hockey, soccer, swimming, martial arts, basketball — athletes in any contact or active sport benefit enormously from completely glasses-free daytime vision.

You want LASIK freedom without the surgery

Daytime freedom from glasses and contacts — reversible at any time, no procedure, no recovery, no permanent changes to your eyes.

Dry eyes make contacts uncomfortable

Because Ortho-K lenses are worn only at night while your eyes are closed, many dry eye patients find them far more comfortable than daytime contacts.

You have mild to moderate myopia

Ortho-K works best for prescriptions up to approximately -6.00 diopters, with or without mild astigmatism. We'll assess this at your consultation.

Your child is between 6 and 18

The earlier myopia management starts, the better the long-term outcome. Early intervention significantly reduces lifetime risk of sight-threatening conditions.

Common questions

What parents &
patients ask us most

Is it safe to sleep in contact lenses?
Ortho-K lenses are specifically designed and FDA-approved for overnight wear — unlike regular contacts, which should never be slept in. They're made from highly oxygen-permeable materials that allow your cornea to breathe throughout the night. With proper hygiene and regular follow-up appointments, Ortho-K has an excellent safety record spanning decades.
How quickly will I see results?
Most patients notice significantly clearer vision after just the first night. Full correction typically takes 2–4 weeks depending on your prescription. During this time your vision will progressively improve each morning until the full effect is achieved.
What age can children start Ortho-K?
We typically recommend starting as young as age 6 for children showing early myopia. The earlier treatment begins, the more effectively we can slow progression and protect long-term vision. Ortho-K is also appropriate for teenagers and adults at any age.
What if my child stops wearing the lenses?
Ortho-K is completely reversible. If your child stops wearing the lenses, the cornea will return to its natural shape within a few days to two weeks, and vision will revert to its uncorrected state. There are no permanent changes to the eye whatsoever.
Does insurance cover Ortho-K in BC?
MSP does not cover Ortho-K as it is considered an elective procedure. However, many extended health benefit plans cover a portion of contact lens costs. Health Spending Accounts (HSAs) or Lifestyle Spending Accounts (LSAs) through your employer can often be applied. We're happy to help you review what coverage you have at your consultation.
How is Ortho-K different from LASIK?
LASIK permanently reshapes your cornea using a laser and cannot be reversed. Ortho-K achieves a similar result — clear, unaided daytime vision — through a gentle overnight reshaping process that naturally wears off if you stop. Ortho-K is also available for children and patients with dry eyes, where LASIK often isn't suitable. It's the ideal alternative for anyone who prefers a reversible, non-surgical approach.
Can Ortho-K really slow my child's myopia?
Yes — this is one of the most well-supported findings in optometry. Clinical studies consistently show Ortho-K reduces myopia progression by approximately 50% compared to standard glasses or soft contact lenses. This matters enormously because high myopia dramatically increases lifetime risk of glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, and retinal detachment. Slowing progression in childhood is one of the best things you can do for your child's long-term vision health.
