Blinking Exercises For Dry Eyes: A Guide to Relief
One of the simplest and most effective ways to manage dry eye, especially if you spend hours in front of screens, is to do blinking exercises. These exercises stimulate the meibomian glands, which are responsible for the healthy tear film and prevent dry eye symptoms caused by a lack of oil production.
The Importance of Blinking
Blinking is essential for maintaining the health of the ocular surface and tear film. Each time we blink, we spread hydrating substances like tears and mucus across our eyes, which helps to clean the ocular surface of debris. Blinking also helps to alleviate the symptoms of dryness and is crucial for maintaining eye health. However, the average person blinks up to 66 percent less frequently while using a computer, which can lead to reduced blinking and an increased risk of dry eye. By being mindful of our blinking habits, especially during screen time, we can help maintain the health of our eyes. Blinking exercises can counteract this by encouraging proper oil secretion from the meibomian glands so your eyes stay moisturized and healthy.
Benefits of Blinking Exercises
Blinking exercises can help alleviate dry eye symptoms and improve ocular surface health. These exercises are easy to integrate into a daily routine and can provide significant relief. Blinking exercises can be done anytime, including during waking hours and while working on a computer. By incorporating blinking exercises into your daily routine, you can improve your blink rate, reduce dry eye symptoms, and maintain healthy eyes. Regular practice of these exercises can make a noticeable difference in your eye comfort and overall eye health.
You can do these simple blinking exercises daily to improve your eye health:
- Gently close your eyes fully – count 1,2
- Squeeze the lids together – count 1,2
- Open your eyes – count 1,2
- Repeat the exercise 5 times
- Repeat the exercise every waking hour for two weeks, then at least four times a day, or once an hour if at the computer.
Remember to squeeze the lids gently, don’t squint, and avoid using the wrong muscle group. The blinking muscles are above the eyelids, so make sure to use the correct muscles when performing the exercise. Consistent practice of this blinking exercise can help improve your eye health and reduce dry eye symptoms
